We are a Hub for Exploration and Sustainable Mining in Africa

The Mining Commission was established under the Mining Act 2010 as amended by the Written Laws (Miscellaneous Amendment) Act 2017. The Commission came into existence through the Government Notice No. 27 issued on 7th July, 2017 and mandated to carry out mining sector regulatory functions as stipulated under Section 22 of the Mining Act, Cap. 123. The Commission’s headquarters is located in Dodoma and is represented in 30 Resident Mines Offices in Tanzania Mainland; Mineral Laboratory located in Dar es Salaam; and 13 Mines Resident Offices in large and medium scale mines. 

 

In its endeavour to provide the mandated roles to its stakeholders, the Mining Commission in the year 2018/2019 prepared Strategic Plan for 2019/2020 – 2023/2024 which provides a broad direction on where the Institution is heading; and Financial Regulations which give details on requirements, restrictions and guidelines, aiming to maintain the integrity of the financial system.

 

The Mining Commission continued to implement its planned activities and thus managed to record some achievements during Financial Year 2022/2023 including: issuance of a total of 9,642 licenses which included 29 Medium Scale Mining Licenses, 373 Prospecting Licenses, 6,511 Primary Mining Licenses, 797 Dealers Licenses, 1,898  Brokers Licenses,  32 Processing Licenses and 2 Special Mining Licenses. 6 Large Scale Mines and 13 Medium Scale Mines were inspected. Large Scale Mines include Williamson Diamonds Limited, Geita Gold Mine,  North Mara Gold Mine, Buckreef Gold Mine, Buzwagi Gold Mine and Bulyanhulu Gold Mine Limited.

 

Furthermore, Commission managed to assure provision of data and Internet services to all Mining Commission Offices for accessing various information systems such as MUSE, GePG, TANePS, PlanRep, Mineral Rights Information System and others.

 

In addition to the aforesaid during the Financial Year 2022/2023, the Mining Commission managed to collect a total of TZS. 678,042,598,813.92 which is equivalent to 82.49 percent of its annual target set in particular year. Out of which TZS. 528,540,454,662.02 were collected from royalties which was equivalent to 77.95 percent and TZS. 149,502,144,151.9 were collected from Clearance and Inspection Fee; other collections contributed by Geological Fees, Mineral Rent, and Laboratory services.
